Braidwood
Live in this beautiful Georgian town: the first to be listed on the NSW State Heritage Register
Beautiful, historic Braidwood is one of the little gems of NSW’s Southern Tablelands. Located about 88km to the east of Canberra, Braidwood today is a fine display of historic Georgian town life infused with a modern sense of style. The entire town is heritage listed for its Georgian Town Plan – one of the last remaining in Australia. The rural life and charm of the town is carried on against many fine examples of 19th century architecture.
Beautiful churches, pubs, cafes, galleries, craft and antique shops all operate in sensitively restored old buildings which have served the town since the frantic gold rush days of the 1850s. Braidwood is surrounded by some of the most pristine bush and National Parks in NSW. These parks attract bushwalkers, four-wheel drivers and nature lovers from all over; they are as magnificent as they are diverse.
The history of the region is truly remarkable; the villages of Araluen, Majors Creek and Mongarlowe are full of stories and relics from times past, myth and legend abound. You’ll always bump into someone with a story about Braidwood and its surrounding villages.
The makeup of Braidwood has changed over the years, the 1970s saw an influx of artists to the town, most of whom are still here today, showing their work through Braidwood’s galleries and further afield.
Farming and rural activities are still one of the main industries in town, this is reflected in the big annual events of Braidwood, the Show, Race Day and the best Rodeo by a country mile.
For a true country experience and a peek back to yesteryear, come for a weekend, a week or find your new home, and be surprised at what Braidood has to offer.
