Tathra

As home to the only deep ocean wharf left on the East Coast, Tathra’s story is one that leads you to looking for more.

Once a bustling hub for the fleet of steamers that connected the Far South Coast to Sydney and Melbourne, Tathra holds a unique place in the local landscape and history books. Fishing is a favourite past time for locals and visitors, whether that be from the 1860’s wharf, out to sea via Kianinny Bay, on the sheltered waters of the Bega River, or from the sands of the town’s expansive beach.  More and more, mountain bike riding is part of Tathra’s attraction with the local mountain bike club designing and maintaining an impressive network of single tracks for all skill levels. The community around Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club is the glue that pulls this tight knit seaside village together, in operation for over 100 years the club one of the oldest in Australia.

Taking full advantage of the sweeping Tathra Beach and the fishing haven of the Bega River, housing in Tathra has been built with the environment in mind. Home to young families, professionals and retirees, Tathra’s housing stock is continually being renewed and updated and has a median house price of $549,000. Only 7 hours from Melbourne, 6 hours from Sydney, and 3 hours from Canberra, Tathra is ideally located and a great place to live.

Bega Valley parents and carers are spoilt for choice when it comes to education. This country community has all the government and non-government choices of a metropolitan area, but without the price tag.

This rural – coastal environment enlivens and child’s education, and mixed with a dynamic local arts community Bega Valley children get a unique experience. Nearby schools include Tathra Public School Tanja Public School, Bega High School, Mumbulla School for Rudolf Steiner Education, St Patrick’s Primary School, Thomas More Christian Montessori School, Sapphire Coast Anglican College, and Lumen Christi Catholic College. In later years the University of Wollongong – Bega Campus boasts an increasing variety of subjects, and a new state of the art purpose built TAFE campus for Bega has recently been announced. Families are reassured by the nearby Pambula Hospital and state-of-the-art Bega Hospital, and Bega Valley parents and carers are spoilt for choice when it comes to education.
