Ken Helm is a 4th generation descendant of German vignerons, who planted vines in the 1850’s at Albury and Rutherglen. Helm Wines of Murrumbateman are pioneers of the Canberra District Wines, organising events such as the Canberra International Riesling Challenge which is held annually at the Hyatt Hotel and Albert Hall in Canberra.

The winery is located in a beautiful rural valley near Murrumbateman Village; about 30 minutes from Canberra, and was established by Ken and his wife Judith in 1973. The property itself boasts a rich history, with the tasting room situated in an 1880 school house.

The CBR Region is diverse in that it offers the luxuries found in large city areas, however, within half an hours from the city centre one can find historic regional towns and rural industries producing world class products. This versatility offers visitors and locals alike, access to a wider than normal range of experiences and is very attractive to the tourism market.

The climate has four distinct seasons; the sharp winters enjoyed by an open fire, spring is when the vines start vines growing, full of promise of a another great crop. In the evenings of the hot dry summers, reprieve is offered by the sea breezes known locally as the Bateman’s Breath; bringing relief for us and the vines and a cool night’s sleep. Finally, autumn welcomes the busy harvesting of grapes, cooler nights and warm dry days, all while being surrounded by the breath taking autumn colours. This makes living and running a business such as Helm Wines in the Region a joy.
