Bermagui

Nestled in the shadow of Gulaga, once an active volcano, Bermagui hugs the edges of its harbour and unique coastal landscape.

Horseshoe Bay and the famous Blue Pool offer respite on warm summer days as does a beer or glass of wine from one of the town’s bars. Fishing drives the local character and economy, with the continental shelf closer here than anywhere else. Warm ocean currents also attract the big game fish like marlin and yellow fin tuna. Charter boats operate deep sea, dive and game fishing trips with decades of local knowledge, side by side in the town’s panoramic harbour with families that have made a living from these waters for generations, as part of Bermagui’s commercial fishing fleet – a staple of the Sydney Fish Market.

A strong artistic community has prospered in the last two decades with creatives of all kinds spurred along by the Four Winds program of events, the annual Sculpture Bermagui exhibition and increasing awareness of Aboriginal culture and tradition.

Only 3 and a half hours to Canberra and 5 and a half hours to Sydney, Bermagui is perfectly located. With a maritime history, Bermagui’s housing stock takes advantage of this beautiful coastal environment. Traditional holiday homes are being snapped up for a new future of casual luxury living into retirement or as modern family homes, with median house prices at $440,000. Bermagui parents and carers are also spoilt for choice when it comes to education.

This country community has all the government and non-government choices of a metropolitan area, but generally speaking without the price tag. This rural – coastal environment enlivens and child’s education, and mixed with a dynamic local arts community, Bega Valley children get a unique experience. Nearby schools include Bermagui Public School, Bega High School, Narooma High School, Mumbulla School for Rudolf Steiner Education, St Patrick’s Primary School, Thomas More Christian Montessori School, and Sapphire Coast Anglican College. In later years the University of Wollongong – Bega Campus boasts an increasing variety of subjects, and just announced – a new state of the art purpose built TAFE campus for Bega. The state-of-the-art hospital at Bega also provides a wealth of health services and facilities.
